Major Assignment #1 Draft #2

In order to be a successful and memorable writer, the writer needs to create a connection with not only their own words, but more importantly, their genre, audience, and the purpose of their writing. Three writers who exceed in doing all three of there things are; Billy Collins, in his Commencement Address at Colorado College, Martin Luther King Jr., in his Letter from Birmingham Jail, and Gloria Anzaldua, in her “How to Tame a Wild Tongue”.
Our first work by Billy Collins is, as many who read it understand, is unorthodox compared to the majority of other commencement addresses, Collins fully understands the stigma  of commencement addresses and knows that the audience will be uninterested by default. So Collins goes against the status quo of a typical address to make his stand out to the audience, and in turn, interesting and fun. Collin’s genre is simply a commencement address, so the audience had expectations of one by probably past experiences, Collin’s used this to his advantage to go against the audiences expectations. “To give such an address is also to walk through a mine field of clichés. Most of which I don’t believe anyway.” -Billy Collins, 2008. Collin’s is able to grow a connection with his audience and be a lot more down-to-earth and relatable to the newly graduated students. The purpose of Collin’s unorthodox address was to inspire the students who are going to be starting their lives and he succeeding in getting their attention, and staying professional when it mattered.
Martin Luther King Jr. is arrested and sent to Birmingham jail after one of his peaceful public protests, he remembers a letter which was sent to him by the local clergymen, and he writes back to them from the prison explaining his views and speaks with much passion in his words, passion for his cause which he knows is just. The genre King is basically forced to use given his situation, is a letter, despite this it is a very formal and appropriate genre, since it is in response to a letter in which he received. King knows his audience and can easily relate to them since he is a man of God himself, he is able to relate to them and bring up points that will grab the clergymen’s attention. “To give such an address is also to walk through a mine field of clichés. Most of which I don’t believe anyway.” Martin Luther King Jr. 1963. King is very passionate about what he believes in and he wants the clergymen, fellow preachers, to understand that, he cleanly and thoroughly explains his case to them in a language they can understand, perhaps in the hopes that they too can preach his cause, and bring justice to the African Americans.
Gloria Anzaldua is a grows up in a Mexican family on the border of Mexico and The United States, she is trapped in between too vastly different cultures and writes passionately about how people are forced to give up their culture and language to live somewhere else. Anzaldua’s genre is about freedom, and liberation from conformity. She writes about how a person should be able to create their own identity, and not conform to another. “This voluntary (yet forced) alienation makes for
psychological conflict, a kind of dual identity – we don’t identify
with the Anglo-American cultural values and we don’t totally
identify with the Mexican cultural values. We are a synergy of
two cultures with various degrees of Mexicanness or Angloness.” -Gloria Anzaldua, 1987. She can easily connect with an audience who grew up or lives in similar circumstances, which are quite a lot of people, especially Mexican immigrants. The purpose of her writing is to hopefully open people’s eyes on the dangers of conforming and how it can mentally damage someone, especially a child like she was.
My theory of writing goes as follows. All are equally important to creating a successful and meaningful work. They play off of each other are can reinforce the meaning behind your work to be expressed for the reader to easily understand, and remember, you cannot have just two without the last, it all must come together like a beautiful tapestry, a work or art.

  1. Hi Justin:
For detailed comments, please go to this link: https://via.hypothes.is/https://justindays23299.edublogs.org/2020/10/05/major-assignment-1-draft-2/

You set this up fairly well, although I don’t think you provide definitions of our terms.
In the body of the essay, you do give some analysis but it often seems rushed. You will need to elaborate (see my comments) and provide more evidence.

Note also need to work on transitions and topic sentences.
